Feb 08, 2022

Composed of members Arem, Hyunjung , Iree ,Jayoung and Yeongeun, K-rock rookie group Rolling Quartz unveils their first EP titled Fighting. Forayed by a cover of Dreamcatcher’s 2017 single “Good Night,” the EP boasts five original tracks with members actively participating in the songwriting and composition of each track.

The cover spotlights the group’s iridescent musical flair with Jayoung’s deep, robust vocalizations complementing the dark rock arrangement of the track. Loaded with intense guitar riffs and strong percussion sounds, “Good Night” takes a wicked interpretation on love and relationship, describing the mindset of a protagonist unable to let go of their love interest. The almost overwhelming sense of romance drives them to the brim of insanity, pushing them to control every move in the relationship: No matter how much you try, oh/ In the endlessly repeating nightmare/ Stay trapped like this forever/ Like my very own doll/ Baby, good night.”

Relying on the overarching thematic of dark magic, the music video shows the quintet deploying various forms of dark arts such as a love potion to gain a sixth sense. Other elements loosely resemble a summoning circle and the occasional use of black feathers. The descriptor of the music video further revealed that Dreamcatcher’s agency was actively involved in the remaking process. “The director of Rolling Quartz’s music video is connected to the director of Dreamcatcher’s music video,” the statement reads. “Rolling Quartz’ director works in the same company, where Dreamcatcher’s director is CEO. The two directors apparently talked a lot about the music video.”

The descriptor further revealed the role Dreamcatcher’s discography has played in Rolling Quartz’s lives; “In the era of hip-hop & EDM, it was rock music that touched the hearts of Rolling Quartz. One of the artists that powerfully lingered in Rolling Quartz’s ears through all the trends was Dreamcatcher.”

Officially debuted on December 30, 2020, with the single “Blaze,” the quintet started their career as two separate bands (Rolling Girlz and Rose Quartz”) and then later merged to form Rolling Quartz. Between 2019 and the onset of the COVID-19 restrictions, the group created momentum around their name through several live performances at clubs in Hongdae, Seoul— a lively neighborhood known for its arts, culture and club scene. Alongside their EP and debut single, Rolling Quartz has two collaborative tracks under their belt- 015B’s “Random,” where they have been credited as a featuring artist and K-pop singer-songwriter AleXa’s “Xtra” where the group participating in rearranging the track’s rock version.
