The first edition of the three-day The Salt Water Creek Festival will be held in Navi Mumbai this week with a lineup that includes Mumbai extreme metal band Demonic Resurrection, groove metal band Zygnema also from Mumbai, Chennai alt metallers Junkyard Groove and upcoming bands such as Hindi prog rock band Coshish from Mumbai.

Salt Water Creek Festival is the third event organized by the five-month-old Mountain Leaf, a recording studio founded in 2012 by Manu Idicula [from gospel band Divine Ragas], Jeff Dani [sessions drummer] and Jimmy Alexander [guitarist with Marathi rock band Moksh], which also manages bands and music events. The festival, which kickstarts on January 18th, will also bring Kochi progressive rock band Motherjane with its new lineup to Mumbai for the first time, featuring vocalist Vivek Thomas and guitarist Santosh Chandran. Motherjane last performed in Mumbai with Suraj Mani as its frontman in 2011, a year after guitarist Baiju Dharmajan left the band.

Other bands slated to perform at the festival include thrash metallers Devoid, alternative/post grunge band Blakc, progressive metal band NerveRek, fusion metal band Paradigm Shift and singer-songwriter Winit Tikoo and his band.

NerveRek frontman Arjun Dhanraj says this will be his band’s first gig with the original lineup after a long gap. “This lineup, with our drummer Ritesh Dharmaraj, last played in 2008, when we were opening for Iron Maiden.” The band’s hour-long set will include songs such as “Hate Undone,” off their upcoming 11-track album, featuring drumming from Gino Banks.

The other band on the bill with an upcoming release is Coshish, whose eponymous self-titled debut album is due in March. “The gig actually came as a surprise, but it’s nice to know we’re playing with old friends and the likes of Junkyard Groove,” says vocalist Mangesh Gandhi, who adds that the band will perform songs such as “Maya.”
