Sam Smith Wanders London Streets in ‘Stay With Me’ Video

British soul crooner’s debut LP, ‘In the Lonely Hour,’ drops this May

Apr 01, 2014

British soul crooner Sam Smith has shared the sparse music video for “Stay With Me,” the latest single from his upcoming debut LP, In the Lonely Hour. In the new clip, Smith wanders the streets of London after an evening of love-gone-wrong. ”Guess it’s true, I’m not good at a one-night stand,” he belts on the track over gospel piano, miming the lyrics to the camera, “But I still need love ”˜cause I’m just a man.” The song builds from that quiet melancholy to a resilient chorus, and the video gets equally cathartic as Smith stumbles upon a massive choir in a nondescript church beaming with light.

Smith truly broke out in 2012 with his vocals on Disclosure’s “Latch,” and ever since, the anticipation has been building for his own debut. In the Lonely Hour, out May 26th on Capitol, blends R&B with elements of classic pop, gospel (as evidenced on “Stay With Me”) and even country; Rolling Stone calls one the LP one of the 27 must-hear albums of the spring. Speaking directly about the album’s bummed-out title, Smith told the magazine, “I deal with all the different aspects of loneliness.”

This weekend, Smith will get lonely on national TV with his debut performance on Saturday Night Live. That episode, hosted by the incomparable Louis C.K., is definitely a must-watch.
