The musician talks about his upcoming music school and jam pad in Bengaluru

Sanjeev Thomas
Bengaluru came calling when guitarist Sanjeev Thomas felt that he needed to do much more than just make music for films and ads in Mumbai. Says the guitarist who recently moved out of Chennai to Bengaluru, “More than the music, I was fed up with the people that I was making music for, because the music is being controlled by someone else.” Thomas, who set up rock bands such as Rainbow Bridge and Buddha Blown from Chennai, channeled his displeasure into setting up a music school and recording studio and Bengaluru is all the more happy for it. Says Thomas, “Bangalore has a great indie music scene, so it was a natural choice to relocate to.”
This month, ”˜Rainbow Bridge,’ Thomas’s recording studio/ jam pad and music school will be opening its doors World Music Day – June 21. Says Thomas, “It’s really a platform to meet and interact with youngsters. People have been asking me for advice and guidance for the last four or five years, so I thought as someone who’s been in music for 15 years, I could finally impart some knowledge to them.” In fact, if the opportunity arises Thomas would even like to revive his band Rainbow Bridge with a new line-up consisting of students from the school.
Having composed music for films as well as fronted a rock band he’s looking forward to groom the students as per their aspirations. He says, “Everybody comes from a different background, and the school is open to all of them. The idea is to create a space where different ideas come together to make great music, and then help them follow whatever path they’d like to.” From his description, the new facility sounds more like a meeting of like-minded musicians rather than a conventional music school. Now that sure sounds like a school of rock.
