Spanish DJ Sara Krin has had a keen interest in music from an early age. Krin began taking music lessons when she turned nine before teaching herself how to spin vinyl records and later going on to study music production. Since then, Krin started releasing music of her own in 2018 and has put out a number of singles and EPs over the years, most recently this year’s Attack EP. In this interview with Rolling Stone India, Krin talks to us about how her sound as a DJ, her songwriting process, India plans and more.

Do you recall the moment when you decided that you wanted to pursue becoming a DJ?

I had been a DJ for years, although I only practiced it at home. I used to love spending hours in my studio and playing my vinyls. But it wasn’t until I decided to learn a [music] production course that I realized that was what I really wanted. I want to be a DJ and dedicate myself to it professionally and transmit my passion to many people.

Being part of the music scene for a few years now and more specifically the electronic music scene, what is it like for you to work within it?

Being a DJ may not be seen as a regular job, but it is. I see it as a long-distance race. It involves a lot of work, artistic as well as creative work, which is something I love. I really like the work behind the scenes, that few people see. The search for new tracks, the image, social networks and above all, the production. When I sit in the studio to create a new track, the feeling when the final moment arrives is indescribable. And then when I am at a show and get to play it in front of the crowd and see their reaction, it is what fills me the most.

As a DJ, can you break down how you put a song together?

When I sit in my studio I don’t go with any specific idea. I always start with a good kick [drum] and bass. Without that, inspiration doesn’t come to me and that’s when I start to shape it with some percussion. That’s when I start to know where I want to face the track and how I want it to sound. There are times that I have a track done in one afternoon and other times it takes me a few more days to finish it. But overall, I’m happy with the sound I’m producing and where I’m going with my music, which right now is towards hard techno.

You mentioned hard techno, how would you describe your sound within that genre?

My sound is forceful, strong and with a lot of groove. I love tracks that have their strength marked in the kick [drum] and in the bass as a characteristic. On the other hand, I like that each track has a melody. When I play them in the booth, I really love it because I love hard techno and it makes me vibrate in a way that people vibrate with me, which is an indescribable moment.

You recently released your new EP Attack. What can you tell us about it?

My techno style is forceful, with strong bass and with melodic synths and I wanted to share my passion through these tracks. On this EP you will find two different tracks but always with my characteristic sound. [The song] ‘Ants’ is more psychedelic, and [the title track] ‘Attack’ is more forceful and it’s one of my favorite tracks I’ve produced till now.

What’s 2023 looking like for you and do you plan on touring India someday?

We are working very hard to make 2023 a year of artistic growth in which I will be playing in many countries where I have not yet been. I’m very excited since one of those countries is India, which means I’ll be announcing a tour there and we’ll be dancing together.
