Scott Pilgrim Vs The World: The Game

[Three and a half stars] Genre: Beat 'Em Up Ubisoft/X360/PS3 Price: Rs 800 (Xbox Live and PlayStation Network)

Most video games based on movies or comics or in this case, both, are usually subpar. Scott Pilgrim Vs the World manages to buck this trend and does so with style. The first thing you notice on firing it up is that it looks something right out of those old 16-bit, 2-D games you played on your old Sega Genesis or at the arcades, what with blockish characters and a purposefully retro design.  This fits the game brilliantly given that the comics were replete with video game references and homages.

It doesn’t stop there. It even plays and sounds like like those beat ’em ups of yore such as Double Dragon or Streets of Rage complete with a full range of meaningful bleeps and bloops. Four-player offline co-operative mode, tough difficulty and exaggerated combos make this a treat for old school gamer and an enjoyable history lesson for the newbies.

Speaking of newbies, the game broadly follows the events of the comics and has you defeating seven evil exes of Ramona Flowers, a girl Scott is in love with. You can choose from four playable characters to wreak havoc in glorious high-definition retro goodness.

As a downloadable title Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is a pretty good investment for gamers regardless of when they’ve gotten into the hobby, that is until we actually know when the movie would release here.
