See AC/DC’s Sporty, Sweaty ‘Play Ball’ Video

The clip features former Shogun drummer Bob Richards in Phil Rudd's stead

AC/DC promised to “mix in the sin” in their single “Play Ball,” which will appear on their upcoming Rock or Bust LP, and now the band has made good with a montage of sweaty, bikini-clad female football players and close-ups of soccer balls bouncing off women’s butts. Of course, there are more benign aspects to the clip, including soccer-playing nuns, elephants putting soccer balls in basketball hoops and, of course, a bounty of shots of AC/DC rocking out on a soundstage.

The video marks the group’s first to feature new rhythm guitarist Stevie Young, the nephew of Malcolm Young, who left the band this year to cope with the debilitating illness dementia. It also reflects the absence of drummer Phil Rudd, who was recently arrested on a number of charges including one ”“ attempting to procure murder ”“ which has since been dropped. But Rudd’s arrest is not why he is not featured in the clip; Rudd missed the video shoot to handle what their spokesperson told Rolling Stone was a “family emergency” this past October. Former Shogun member Bob Richards played drums in his stead.

“I never thought we’d do this again, but here we are with a new album, getting all the boys together again,” frontman Brian Johnson said in a behind-the-scenes video on set. “It’s fantastic.”

He also spoke positively of the group’s new guitarist. “Stevie Young is just doing a brilliant job to stand in Malcolm’s place,” Johnson said. “And he’s just gone on and do it, fulfill Mal’s wishes of making music.”

A select group of AC/DC fans who either live in or travel to a small Australian town called the Rock (population just over 3,000) will be the first to hear the new record. The group’shas planned a listening party in the town to take place on November 23rd, well in advance of Rock or Bust’s December 2nd release date.

The band recently said that Rudd’s absence would not be an obstacle to their upcoming 2015 world tour.
