Heartbroken track appears on Underwood’s 2018 album ‘Cry Pretty’
Carrie Underwood.
Carrie Underwood adopts a swanky club vibe in the video “Drinking Alone,” which was released on Wednesday. Last week, Underwood wowed the CMA Awards audience with a performance of the song that featured period dress and tricky choreography, elements of which remain in the video and its steamy narrative about two heartbroken souls.
Directed by Randee St. Nicholas, the video features Underwood giving a cabaret-style performance, dressed in a look similar to her CMA Awards rendition. The storyline loosely follows the song’s lyrics, as Underwood spots a lonely drinker out in the crowd and finds herself pulled toward him. The two get cozy as they drown their sorrows, worried only about the excitement of the moment. But there’s also a little hint that we might be looking at multiple timelines, as a photograph of the two main characters goes up in flames.
In addition to performing at the CMA Awards, Underwood also co-hosted the show with Reba McEntire and Dolly Parton. “Drinking Alone” is the latest single from her 2018 album Cry Pretty and was written by the singer with her co-producer David Garcia and Brett James. Underwood’s blockbuster Cry Pretty 360 Tour played more than 60 dates in 2019 before wrapping up in late October.
