See Dave Grohl React to Hearing His First Solo Demo From 1990

'Sonic Highways' outtake from Seattle's Laundry Room Studio digs up Grohl's first solo recording, "Gods Look Down"

Dave Grohl reacts to hearing his first ever solo recording, a track called “Gods Look Down” recorded in 1990 at Barrett Jones’ Laundry Room Studio in Seattle, in a outtake from the Foo FightersSonic Highways docuseries.

“It was the first song he ever wrote and recorded,” the video notes. “This was also the first of many songs recorded with Barrett at Laundry Room Studio.”

“Gods Look Down” was originally recorded by Grohl’s pre-Nirvana band Scream in December 1989 and marked the first time the drummer ever provided lead vocals on a track; Scream’s version wouldn’t be released until 1993.

The version in the outtake, however, features Grohl performing all the instruments, which he would largely do again when recording the Foo Fighters’ 1995 self-titled debut. “This is a different version than the Scream one,” the Laundry Room noted on YouTube. “He was in Scream at the time but this was the first song he ever recorded on his own playing all the instruments.”

Nirvana would also record at the Laundry Room Studio in April 1992, a session that yielded three tracks: Nevermind b-sides “Curmudgeon” and “Oh, the Guilt” and a cover of the Wipers’ “Return of the Rat.”
