See Indo-Canadian Vocalist Dahlia’s Scenic Video For ‘Wash Away’

The clip was filmed in Trinidad and Tobago

Ever since Indo-Canadian singer Dahlia released her EP Shift in 2018, she spent a year promoting the record and even went on to write for other artists. Now, the vocalist is tweaking her sound to let her voice stand out more in her songs. Dahlia showcases this with her latest release, the hopeful “Wash Away.”

The new song was penned when Dahlia was at a low point in her life. “I was going through an extremely difficult period with my divorce and one day I went into the studio with [American producer] Roy Hamilton III and that song just poured out of me,” she says. Initially “Wash Away” was written along with a host of other songs with the intention of pitching them to other artists. “I knew in my gut that I had to keep it for my own record,” says Dahlia. While the lyrics are a mantra to the vocalist to awaken her inner fighting spirit and “rewrite what’s in the stars,” the sonic approach is minimalist with delicate string arrangements and Dahlia’s poignant vocals.

As Dahlia shuffles between Trinidad and Tobago and Toronto, she decided to capture the scenic visuals for “Wash Away” while in the Caribbean. The clip – directed by Nickolai Salcedo – opens with Dahlia performing the song in front of a white backdrop and includes shots of her on a beautiful beach and quaint caves at Las Cuevas. She says, “I wanted the cinematography to capture the hopeful message of the song and for people to find their own healing through it.”

Next, Dahlia is working on a song about something entirely different. “Glory and Gold” is about breaking out of the chains of capitalism. Due to the current global health crisis, Dahlia’s forthcoming gigs — including a set at the New Fire Festival in Trinidad next month — have been put on hold. The vocalist is also working towards returning to perform in India, where she last performed in 2018. “We are currently planning the tour with the talented humans at The Bombay Jazz Club, Rajesh Punjabi and Dee Wood to put it all together. It’s going to be even more spectacular this time around,” she says.
