See Kid Cudi’s Dark ‘Frequency’ Video

Rapper wanders through jungle in self-directed 'Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin' clip

Kid Cudi dances alone in the new “Frequency” video, alternating between muted croons and staccato raps as he narrates a search for a “couple girls, [a] couple stories and a couple shrooms.” Cartoonish, large mushrooms appear as do several women, who lapse in and out of focus.

“Frequency,” a low-key hip-hop ballad, is slated to appear on Cudi’s next album, Passion, Pain & Demon Slayin’. Initially Cudi hoped to release the LP on September 30th. The rapper said he missed that deadline “due to some minor sample clearances still being finalized.” “No one could be more excited and anxious for you to consume the magical musical candy I’ve prepared for you these past five months,” he said.

In a letter posted to Facebook several days later, Cudi told his fans that he checked himself into a rehab facility for “depression and suicidal urges.” “My anxiety and depression have ruled my life for as long as I can remember and I never leave the house because of it,” he wrote. “The album is still on the way … I wanted to square away all the business before I got here so I could focus on my recovery.” He apologized for his absence and promised to return “stronger.”
