The track is the lead single off the South Korean group's ninth EP, 'Turn Over'
Shortly after mesmerizing the world with their performances on the reality television show Kingdom: Legendary War, SF9 take their musical identity to the next level with “Tear Drop.”
The dance track builds its foundation with deep house, a sound the nine-member group previously explored with their 2018 hit track “Now or Never.” Composed by Daniel Kim and Al Swettenham and written by Han Sung Ho along with members Youngbin, Zuho, and Hwiyoung, “Tear Drop” outlines the process of accepting the end of a relationship and validating the sadness it entails through the release of tears.
SF9 adopt a sophisticated cinematic approach with set designs incorporating broken statues, chandeliers, flowing white curtains, and flowers. The music video opens with all the members appearing still– the camera then swiftly focuses on members Jae Yoon and Da won who open the track singing, “On a sunny day/ We sit face to face/ Our casual small talk/ Sounds awkward.” The chorus sticks to a minimalistic lyrical composition, allowing the group to focus on harmonization. The outro layers heighten the sonic appeal of the track by layering lead rapper Zuho’s flow with the delicate hook, predominantly found in the chorus.
SF9’s ninth mini-album, Turn Over, is the group’s first project after their 2020 album, 9loryUS. The six-track project consists of tracks, “[Believer],” “Love Again,” “Off My Mind,” “Fanatic,” “Hey Hi Bye” and the title track, “Tear Drop.”
