The singer-songwriter and producer duo from Surrey, British Columbia contrast their dark R&B EP ‘Midnight’ with a buoyant new offering
Canada-based Punjabi artists Shally Rehal and KULTARGOTBOUNCE aka Kultar Randhawa keep their collaborative strength going on their latest single “Step,” which comes with a campy music video that travels from the disco era to the early 2000s in aesthetic.
Rehal, who plays the afro wig-wearing crooner in the disco ball-illuminated music video directed, shot and edited by Naview, says the Punjabi song is essentially about drawing someone to the dancefloor while praising their beauty. Kultar adds, “The world just went through a rough moment with Covid making us distant from one another. We wanted to create a song that gave an inviting feeling of harmony.”
It’s a different turn from their December 2022 EP Midnight, which was rooted in dark R&B songs with a smattering of yesteryear Hindi movie samples. Kultar says that with “Step,” they wanted to show a contrast in sound and visual approach. “We actually had ‘Step’ recorded well before any of our other records but we both agreed we’d release it when it felt right,” the producer adds.
The music video concept was also put together by Kultar, shortly after they recorded the song. “The video is funny, cool and it puts a smile on your face when you watch it and I really feel like it captured the energy of the song,” Rehal says. From kurtas to basketball jerseys and oversized clothes and unmissable sunglasses, the video for “Step” travels through the Seventies, Nineties and early 2000s in style.
While Rehal has been at since the age of 17 and began releasing music in 2020, KULTARGOTBOUNCE has been a name in the production and sound engineering field for a decade now. The duo first connected on Instagram in 2021, with Rehal contacting Kultar for mixing duties. The producer adds, “I was originally supposed to just mix and master the song but the vocals he had recorded needed some work still. We ended up re-recording that and when I heard his vocals in person, I instantly knew I had to produce my own records for him.” Made in October 2021, Kultar says “Step” is one among many more projects coming up from the duo.
