What was originally intended as a trip to India to shoot music videos for his upcoming album has now become a full-fledged tour for Sri Lankan-origin Canadian hip-hop artist Shan Vincent de Paul. The rapper — along with fellow Tamil producer Yanchan Rajmohan and Bengaluru DJ Dwell aka Sandeep Jay — kick off a five-city tour on February 9th at Vh1 Supersonic in Pune.

Joined by de Paul’s go-to filmmaker and photographer Gajan Balan, the Oh Gawd! India tour stops by Mumbai (with a workshop and show on February 11th and 12th), Bengaluru (February 14th), New Delhi (February 21st) and closes with two shows in Chennai (February 22nd and 29th). The rapper says about planning an India tour, “It was more of grasping the live music culture there, as that varies in every country. The timing has been great though, India is having it’s hip-hop renaissance moment and for us to be a part of that is exciting. Our official debut on Indian soil will be at the Vh1 Supersonic Festival, so we’re starting with the bar pretty high.”

Arriving on the back of some success and even viral fame thanks to his and Yanchan’s “Mrithangam Rap” series, the tour is booked by New Delhi promoter Ranii Kaur. It’s a first for her to be working with a rapper, but adds “it will be a learning experience.” It’s new ground for de Paul and Yanchan as well, but they’re more excited than nervous. De Paul says about their setlist, “We definitely try to give each city something memorable and exclusive.  The performance always evolves with each city, so it’ll be interesting to see where the set is by the end of the tour, in Chennai.” Yanchan adds, “I definitely want to have a very intimate connection with our fans during the mrithangam raps portion of our performance. Possibly bringing fans on stage to share that moment with us would be memorable.”

While there’s de Paul’s own material being performed, there’s also his fusion-leaning collaboration with Yanchan, which is a different project with its own forthcoming album called IYAAA. Yanchan has a solo set as well, which will segue into de Paul’s high-energy, moody performance. The rapper says, “The set will vary from fusion to a traditional rap set with DJ Dwell backing me on the decks.”

The other focus throughout the tour, however, remains making the music videos for two songs off de Paul’s solo album Made in Jaffna and one song off IYAAA. De Paul adds, “Filming in India has always been a dream of mine; the textures, colours, architecture, and energy is unlike anything we have here in Canada — so it’ll be special for me.”
