"We consider the video editor as a musical instrument," Coimbatore producer Shaq-T says
Coimbatore-based duo Dasa aka Nikhel Kallingel and Shaq-T aka Sakthivel Karthikeyan bring in their hometown, their love for car racing and more in the first part of the music video for their two-track EP Throw It/Thooki Veesu.
With a few pop culture references from Tamil film comedy for good measure, the video for “Throw It” sees the duo — joined by rapper DHP — throw a party of epic proportions until their boss comes around at the end of part one to find his prized, modded-out race car totaled. In a nod to classic Tamil film storylines, there are comedy scene dialogs sampled, plus characters like Big Chakra and Turbo Thangachi.
This is the pair’s second EP out via maajja, who previously put out their EP Kalliyugam in 2021. With “Throw It,” there are a few beat switches and influences drawn from Tamil folk rhythms straight out of the streets.
Shaq-T says there’s a link between hip-hop and car culture that’s been seen arguably right from the start. Dasa adds in his statement, “Both hip-hop and car culture celebrate individuality and self-expression. Car customization is a common practice in the car enthusiast community, and it aligns well with the creativity and self-expression often seen in hip-hop music and fashion. This project, Throw It/ Thooki Veesu revolves around the car racing scene in India and we intended for it to have the same sense of exhilarating energy that you’d feel in street racing.”
The producer says they wanted the video to “excude a cinematic feel,” which explains why “Throw It” ends up with an “intermission.” He adds in his statement, “Our style deviates from the stereotypical video effects often found in Indian hip-hop music videos, opting instead for clean and fluid edits that seamlessly fuse with the music. We consider the video editor as a musical instrument, allowing us to achieve this unique approach.”
The second part of the Throw It/Thooki Veesu video, which picks up right where the intermission left off, will be out later this month. “Thooki Veesu” features hip-hop artist King Sinister joining Shaq-T and Dasa.
