Baiaineh Shangpliang – bassist for Shillong folk fusion band Summersalt – has died at the age of 35. The band confirmed the news via Instagram yesterday.
In the post, the band said, “Words cannot begin to describe how hard this has hit us, our beloved brother a stalwart behind the bass, Baiaineh C Shangpliang otherwise known lovingly as Nah was taken away from our midst suddenly this morning in Sohra due to brief illness.” The group added, “He leaves behind his wife and his son. This is the most heartbreaking news. Please keep the immediate family in your prayers in this very difficult time. You are safe with the Lord Nah.”
It was only this past January when Shangpliang along with the rest of Summersalt made their way down to Mumbai to work on their 11-track sophomore album Kliar at the city-based Yash Raj Films Studios. When we caught up with the band during one of their sessions at the studio, we noticed how heavily involved the bassist was in putting together the record. At the time of recording, the band were still plotting out when the album would release.
The bassist also ran a studio in Jaiaw where he produced music for other artists which included various genres such as Gospel, rock, folk and more.
