The Indian-origin artist travels to Kochi to draw from Kerala's folk traditions in her latest, the title track off her new album

U.A.E.-based Indian-origin artist Shilpa Ananth asks a pertinent question at the start of her new song “Reproduction” — “What am I trying to say that’s different this time?”

The title track off her just-released new album Reproduction — which includes singles she’s released over the years — comes with a “goddess energy” music video made by Studio Ainak & JonB Productions in Kochi. With director Su. at the helm, the video for “Reproduction” is edited by Sooraj S.A. and shot by cinematographer Archana Ghangrekar. The visual draws from Kerala folk traditions — including dance and drama artform Mudiyettu — and goes on to match the song’s hypnotic dancefloor turns as well.

In an earlier interview with Rolling Stone India, Ananth spoke about the album, “The process of creating it has been cathartic, and made me come to terms with owning up to my own strong, feminine, Goddess energy, as well as completely shedding any last vestiges of patriarchal control upon me, as I take up the space and time that I need to become the best version of myself that I can possibly be.”

With the release of the album, Ananth revealed in a press statement that there is a narrative that runs throughout the record. “Reproduction is a powerful story about a woman who dares to defy societal and cultural norms, breaking the holds of patriarchal control, and choosing to follow her dreams rather than to do the stereotypical, tried and tested path followed by those before her. Through each song she finds more and more liberation, strength, and acceptance within herself,” she added in her statement.
