Pop artist Shilpa Joshi flips the script on a duplicitous partner on her lo-fi-inspired Punjabi song “Jhoote Laare,” made with lyricist-composer Lovish Sheetal and producer Yash Aggarwal.

The singer-songwriter rounded off 2024 with the heartbreak song that followed her previous singles, “Lahore Nachda,” “Tenu Dil De Wich” and “Appa Dovein.” Joshi, who has been releasing music from as early as 2018, says she, Sheetal and Aggarwal intended to write a romantic/pop song but then, the lyricist-composer came up with the idea for “Jhoote Laare,” which roughly translates to “false stories.” She adds, “There was an instant reaction to how beautifully the song was written. We needed a banger and this song is one. Yash Aggarwal, my music producer, thought of adding some modern rhythms so that we could cater to the youths in our audience.”

Joshi reiterates that the song – along with its slick music video by filmmaker Kevin Thakur featuring actor Shubham Sharma as a male lead – marks the start of “SJ 2.0,” referring to a new artist era of sorts. “Jhoote Laare” gets into themes of trust, heartbreak and “the fragile nature of promises in relationships,” according to the video description. It adds, “The song delves into the pain of realizing that the commitments once made were nothing but empty lies.”

The artist calls her present team-up of Lovish Sheetal and Yash Aggarwal as YSL (in a possible reference to the fashion giant, and perhaps not so much American rapper Young Thug’s label). Joshi is all praise for the music video and Thakur as well, adding that she loves “working in a team” for her projects.

With that team spirit, Joshi considers 2025 as “the greatest year for all” and promises “back to back” releases with the YSL team. “I know we won’t disappoint you,” she says.
