Lisbon-based Indo-American producer Aasheesh Paliwal aka ShiShi has climbed a few rungs since the release of millions-streamed songs like “Aarti” in 2017. From performing to thousands to releasing his 2022 album Chrysalis, the constant in ShiShi’s music, one could posit, is his penchant for creating meditative music that could also find a home on the club dancefloor.

That kind of range is heard strikingly well on his latest single “When It’s My Time,” which comes an entire year after Chrysalis. In the year that he’s taken off from putting out music, ShiShi says he wrote more than 150 songs across projects. “When It’s My Time,” with its euphoric, “organic” production that ties in drums and guitar, sees ShiShi invoke his inner Bruce Springsteen for the evocative hooks. Interestingly, ShiShi says the song incorporates elements from kirtan music and includes a full-string orchestra. A press statement for the song adds, “While ShiShi has always made those connections, his real creative growth shines through in the songwriting and vocal performance of the song. The lyrics, fully written by ShiShi, describe a heartfelt message about life, death and loss.” The song is accompanied by a vertical music video that has snippets of ShiShi recording “When It’s Time,” and footage of nature and the outdoors.

With that many songs in the bank, ShiShi says he will release a track every two weeks, building up to an album titled Love Songs To God. He says he intends to “use catchy pop music as a trojan horse for spiritual awakening.” While his electronic mixes have often balanced spiritual and high-energy, the upcoming album and new material aim to “evoke a divine feeling” without crafting anything “overtly devotional or new age.”

Outside of his releases as ShiShi, he’s also collaborating with Indo-American singer-songwriter Aditya Rao for a new project called BAHÉ. With three songs ready for release, the first single is expected in April. The far-sighted vision for 2023 also involves ShiShi bringing his act to India, to tour festivals in December.
