Shriya Crafts a Late-Night Club Banger with ‘Like That’

Mumbai singer-songwriter takes to sultry R&B and pop on her latest song, produced by Hersh Desai

On her fourth single this year, Mumbai singer-songwriter Shriya showcases nocturnal R&B and pop with “Like That,” which comes with a music video directed by Varun Kanakia and Abhay Mehta.

The monochrome video tears away from the usually colorful world of Shriya, who’s previously put out songs like “Written In The Stars,” “On My Mind” and “Ride For Me” this year. There’s shadow play and a minimalistic production that points towards heightening Shriya’s lyrics about what she terms “the thrill of closeness.” The song is buoyed in production by Hersh Desai, who has also mixed the song.

The artist turns up the heat in a way with lyrics about intimacy like never before, and that’s often a pre-requisite for all good R&B. Shriya says she wanted to take listeners “on a journey of vivid imagery.” She adds, “My lyrics beckon you into my world, where desire and intensity merge. The song exudes romantic energy. I crafted this track envisioning it blasting through nightclub speakers, as it strikes the ideal balance between chill and groove.”

Taking to Instagram ahead of the song’s streaming release in late July, Shriya shared her apprehensions about releasing “Like That” knowing that it makes her, like all artists, “vulnerable to criticism.” She adds in the post, “This time, though, I’m revealing a side of myself I’ve never shared before. For a long time, women have often shied away from exploring themes of intimacy in their music due to cultural constraints, and I felt it was time to break that silence.”

Shriya went on to share the song with her family and friends but says she was “absolutely terrified” of what they would think. “But I’m super grateful to have them be so supportive of me and pass zero judgment on my music. And my best friends, too for giving each song as much love as there is,” her post adds.

She also spoke about the process of making the song, “The night Hersh Desai sent me this track, I was absolutely in awe of the production. From the moment I heard the guitar lick in the pre chorus, I knew exactly what I wanted the song to say. The music inspired me to write.”

It’s the first of more songs coming up from Shriya, leading up to an EP later this year.
