Indo-Canadian Artists Skinny Local and Cartel Madras Wreck Things on Rap-Metal Inspired ‘MMM’

Industrial locales and videogame aesthetics populate the music video directed by filmmaker, photographer and rapper Gbohunmi

Surrey-based producer Skinny Local aka Bhaveek Makan teams up once again with Calgary/Toronto-based duo Cartel Madras’ Eboshi and Contra for a twisted, grimy rap-metal informed song called “MMM,” with an action-packed music video to boot.

Short for “Meet My Maker,” the new song follows Skinny Local and Cartel Madras’ previous collaboration on the song “Goonda Gold,” which is just about to surpass the million-streamed mark on Spotify. While that 2019 release was an all-out banger, “MMM” sees both artists presenting an evolved style. It’s a comeback of sorts for Cartel Madras, who last released their album The Serpent & The Tiger in 2021. Skinny Local, for his part, has dropped “MMM” as part of his upcoming album Games.

What hasn’t changed throughout the rap duo’s career, however, is their no-holds-barred approach to be as violent and confrontational in their music. On “MMM” – released via Vancouver label Snakes x Ladders – Cartel Madras keep that tone and Skinny Local provides a suitably riotous production, clanging beats, noisy riffs and all.

A press release for the song mentions that “MMM” is centered around “a character who is disillusioned and full of rage.” Eboshi says in her statement, “I chose to delve into the idea of ‘meeting my maker’ to articulate the strange pessimism of the past year everyone was feeling and probably also because I was very angry for a lot of last year.”

The music video for “MMM” is directed by filmmaker, photographer and rapper Gbohunmi and was shot in a warehouse on the outskirts of Calgary, apparently under freezing temperatures. The cast – including Cartel Madras (Skinny Local is mostly seen as an aloof, boss-level character) – brings the fight to this setting.
