Slipknot Split With Drummer Jay Weinberg

Weinberg joined the group in December 2013 following original drummer Joey Jordison’s departure

Slipknot have parted ways with their longtime drummer Jay Weinberg. On Sunday, the band announced on their website that after a decade behind the kit, Weinberg would be leaving the band.

“We would like to thank Jay Weinberg for his dedication and passion over the past ten years,” Slipknot wrote in their statement. Weinberg joined the band in December 2013 per his website, following original drummer Joey Jordison’s departure in that same month. At the time, Jordison said he left for what he described as “personal reasons,” but in 2016 he revealed he had a neurological disease that caused his departure. “I got really, really sick with a horrible disease called transverse myelitis. I couldn’t play anymore. It was a form of multiple sclerosis, which I don’t wish on my worst enemy.” Jordison died “peacefully in his sleep” in 2021.

“No one can ever replace Joey Jordison’s original sound, style or energy, but Jay honored Joey’s parts and contributed to the last three albums and we, the band, and the fans appreciate it. But as ever, Slipknot is intent on evolving. The band has decided to make a creative decision, and to part ways with Jay. We wish Jay all the best and are very excited for what the future holds.”

The son of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band drummer Max Weinberg, Jay Weinberg played on the Iowa metal band’s 2014 album .5: The Gray Chapter, 2019’s We Are Not Your Kind, and last year’s The End, So Far. Weinberg, who played a show with the band in Toluca, Mexico at Heaven & Hell Fest on Nov. 3 and was recognized as Metal Drummer of the Year in the 2023 Modern Drummer Reader’s Poll in September, has not yet commented publicly on his split with Slipknot.
