Alternative pop group stands tall with this triumphant track
On “Move in the Right Direction,” the alternative pop group Gossip conquers their demons in style. Singing “I have faced my fears/Now I can move in the right direction,” frontwoman Beth Ditto finds a fresh sense of confidence, emboldened by self-discovery and a new outlook on the future.
Though the band typically works within itself, “Direction” was co-written by producer Brian Higgins. Most Gossip songs are crafted first by drummer Hannah Blilie and guitarist Nathan Howdeshell before Ditto adds her flourish; this time, Gossip added another step to the process with Higgins. “It was definitely very different for us to hand over that creative side a little bit and then reinterpret it in our own way,” admits Blilie.
“I think we’ll try anything once,” adds Howdeshell. “Every time we do a record, I feel like it’s totally different from the last one. That’s sort of the idea.”
“Direction” is from Gossip’s upcoming fifth studio album, A Joyful Noise, out May 22nd on Columbia.
