As rock makes a solid return into global pop, South Korean artists are offering their own takes on the genre, eager to innovate. Rapper BigOne dives effortlessly into this endeavor, recruiting singer-songwriter and producer Jay B and rock band PrismFilter for his new track “Windy Day.”

Co-written by BigOne and Jay B (under his moniker Def.), “Windy Day” reminisces about a relationship that has ended–the rapper states that he remembers those moments whenever the wind hits him on a particularly cold day. While he understands it’s over, he can’t help but think about his lover and hope they remember him too. “You’re far away from me, and by your side/ I’m no longer there, but I’m always by your side/ I’ll be there so you can let go/ Wherever you fall/ I’ll always be there.” Jay B adds, “Walking alone on this complicated road/ It feels weird because you should be by my side,” outlining the depth of the loss.

Co-composed by PrismFilter, Big One and Jay B, “Windy Day” is a powerful alt-rock ballad. This isn’t completely new territory for BigOne (check out his 2020 rap-rock release “Tonight” with Ash Island) and he delivers rockstar elegance with ease thanks to his gritty, raw vocals. Jay B’s voice is dreamy and smooth, adding a touch of softness to the melancholy on the track, and it’s a breath of fresh air to see him tackle alternative rock. PrismFilter are explosive, with guitarist Hong Hoonki in particular shining with his soaring and angst-fueled guitar solo at the track’s bridge.

The music video switches between shots of all the artists hanging out together and performing as the wind blows around them in a mad hurricane. In typical rockstar fashion, they also gleefully trash a grocery store and their own performance space.

“Windy Day” is BigOne’s first comeback since releasing his 2020 LP, Love+Emotion+Blossom. Meanwhile Jay B recently dropped a collaborative single with Filipino-Australian singer James Reid and Taiwanese-American rapper ØZI titled, “Hello 2.0 Legends Only.”
