Hear Soundgarden’s Loose, Unreleased ‘Rusty Cage’ From Box Set

Band details mega 'Badmotorfinger' reissue, due out this fall, to mark album's 25th anniversary

Soundgarden will mark the 25th anniversary of their commercial breakthrough, Badmotorfinger, with a massive, seven-disc deluxe box set this fall. The album contained the gut-rattling single “Jesus Christ Pose,” as well as the heavier “Outshined” and “Rusty Cage,” the latter of which Johnny Cash later covered. It has since been certified double platinum. The box set, which will come out on November 18th, contains a remastered edition of the original LP, previously unreleased studio outtakes, live recordings, music videos and more.

The super-deluxe box set edition contains four CDs, two DVDs and a Blu-ray audio disc; of its 109 tracks (including video), 79 are previously unreleased. The group is also putting out a pared-down, two-disc edition of the reissue. There will also be a double-LP version and a single-disc reissue.

To preview the releases, Soundgarden released a previously unreleased alternate version of “Rusty Cage.” A studio outtake, the version sounds generally looser than the one that made it onto the album. The bass comes to the forefront, especially in the breakdown at the end, and Chris Cornell occasionally plays around with the phrasing of the lyrics.

The box set contains a disc of 15 previously unreleased studio outtakes, one of which ”“ “New Damage” ”“ features a guitar solo by Queen’s Brian May. The group’s Live at the Paramount ”“ recorded in Seattle in the spring of 1992 ”“ has been remixed from the original analogue tapes; the video version of that concert has been newly re-edited from the camera masters and mixed in 5.1 surround sound. Another DVD contains the band’s Motorvision home video from 1992 along with a number of live performances and interviews. And the Blu-ray disc contains the album, the LP’s three official music videos and three B sides all mixed in high-def 5.1 surround sound.

It comes in a collector’s box with a revolving Badmotorfinger icon that actually moves and a 52-page book with unreleased photos, testimonials from musicians and peers and more. There’s also a 3-D lenticular print of the cover, photo cards of each band member, an album sticker, a spark plug sticker and an iron-on patch.

The group is offering preorders of the album through its website. That also includes a seven-inch of “Jesus Christ Pose” b/w “Stray Cat Blues” and a seven-inch adapter shaped in a way that resembles the cover art.

The two-disc edition contains the original album, remastered, along with eight studio outtakes (including “New Damage”) and seven live tracks on the second disc. The double-LP edition comes on 180-gram black vinyl (side four is an etching) and it includes a removable 3-D lenticular cover and download card.
