New Delhi-based, Assam-origin artist Sourav Dey takes the genre-fluid approach to his discography, keeping listeners guessing with new songs like the tender ballad “Par Na Karoon Main Bayaan” and the prog-meets-classical song “Jiyara.”

Dey, who also studied at the K.M. Music Conservatory in Chennai and has been releasing music since 2020, has so far composed cinematic pieces suited for background scores as well as electronic-fusion songs and more. He pushes the boundaries further with his latest pair of releases.

Out at the end of February, “Jiyara” is a collaboration with fellow Delhi NCR artist Satwik Tripathy, which, according to Dey, “tells a powerful story about a young woman facing social injustice and the consequences of gossip and celebrates the quest for one’s own battles and the everlasting power of the human spirit.” Dey says he and Tripathy worked on the song during the lockdown, initially exchanging ideas through voice notes.

With the lyrics written by Vinita Mishra, Dey also says “Jiyara” was drawing from 2020 horror film Bulbbul, particularly the ending. He also called in sitarist Mehtab Ali Niazi to give a classical-meets-prog edge to the song. “The song’s aggressive yet sympathetic vocal delivery was greatly enhanced by the lyrics,” Dey adds. Tripathy, in his statement, talks about how the song really “put us to the test.”

In the works for three years, Tripathy says most of the work was completed by 2023 but it took a while to cross the finish line in terms of being satisfied with the sound. “We had new ideas and discussions every day, which also helped us become more clear. Following that, several layers were eliminated,” Tripathy adds.

He lends guitars for Dey on “Par Na Karoon Main Bayaan,” which released in March with a music video that narrates a chance reconnection between childhood friends. The song features singers Aathira Gopi and Hardik Sawhney, lyrics by Garima Setia and flautist Rohit Prasanna. A press release for the song states, “Whether romantic or platonic, the song’s universal themes touch upon the essence of human connection, reminding us of the profound beauty found in shared experiences of love and companionship.”

Filmed in Bolpur, West Bengal and directed by Sushant Pandey and starring Sonalika Das and Rajdeep Bhattacharya as the lead pair, there’s a pastoral charm, plus the element that’s evoked by the joba phool (hibiscus). “[It] symbolizes sweetness, love, and friendship that often remain unspoken,” a description for the video adds.
