In late 2016, South African fingerstyle guitarist Guy Buttery’s India association strengthened when he met Indian-origin Ayurvedic doctor and music therapist Kanada Narahari. Also a sitar player, Narahari treated Buttery to Indian classical music that healed the guitarist.
Earlier this month, Durban-based Buttery released his new album Nadi, featuring Narahari in what became a riveting fusion album that paired the gentle versatility of both, the acoustic guitar and the sitar, with Indian classical vocals and African rhythms. Buttery said in Nadi’s album notes, “Diving into Kanada’s music was definitely one of the reasons I’m still here today. The consistent tonal center at the heart of Indian classical music, literally became my support pillar over this period. A central core of sorts in which to fall back on, strengthen and discover.”
Perhaps a direct effect of releasing the album, Buttery is now in India courtesy of Shimla label Pinecone Records for six shows in five cities, between November 15th and November 24th. Already hailed as one of the leading artists in South Africa, Buttery has performed all around the globe and features in the works of artists like Dave Matthews, Jethro Tull, Afropop artist Salif Keita, guitarist Jon Gomm and acoustic artist Kaki King, among others.
In India, Buttery will perform alongside tabla artist Amjad Khan and sarangi artist Mudassir Khan for one trio show in Gurugram (November 15th), plus a duo set with Amjad Khan in New Delhi on November 17th. Solo shows include November 19th in Pune and November 24th in Kochi. Joining the lineup is Shimla fingerstyle guitarist and storyteller Rachanachar aka Pranjal Uniyal.
