Premiere: Space Is All We Have Turn to Rap-Rock in Surging ‘High Society’ Video

The Bengaluru-based space-rock act lets vocalist Shiyaz Abdul unleash his rap side on the first of two new singles this year

Bengaluru act Space Is All We Have explore the darker allure of instant gratification on their new rap-infused prog rock song “High Society.” Vocalist Shiyaz Abdul he wrote the song during the peak of the pandemic, about how the world chases “that elusive dopamine hit.”

Guitarist Shashank Akella adds that the song – which starts in a total rap-rock direction and builds into slick, grand modern prog that’s often associated with Space Is All We Have – “serves as a reminder that even within the realm of societal pressures and the relentless pace of life, the quest for authenticity and self-discovery persists.”

The songs arrives much after their 2020 album Thank You, Universe! and guitarist Krishna M. Sujith says the idea to explore rap came from wanting to explore Shiyaz’s hip-hop leanings after seeing him excel mostly as a straight-up singer on their prior material. The guitarist adds, “You could say we essentially wrote this whole album with that in mind during the pandemic and decided to bench all the other songs we’d written after Thank You, Universe! to be released with the third  album.”

It’s also the first release from Space Is All We Have with drummer Dev Ramkumar (from rap-rock band Anthracite) and bassist Kashyap Jois on board. It was mixed and mastered by Adam Bentley at Arch Echo, who says the band have a “sincere and unique musical vision.”  On the live front, Space has also enlisted DJ Dwell aka Sandeep J on turntables “to bring in that 2000s nu-metal sound” as the drummer puts it.

Space will next release a second single from their upcoming album, called “Space Mafia,” with the plan to release one new song each month.
