Pritam, Anirudh Ravichander and A.R. Rahman lead the most streamed artists on Spotify India in 2023, while KING's "Maan Meri Jaan" is the most streamed song this year
It’s that time of the year when all the multi-colored Spotify Wrapped cards begin to populate social media feeds, from artists and listeners alike.
The music platform, for its part, has put out stats for the most streamed artists, albums, songs and podcasts on Spotify in India for the year 2023.
For the third year in a row, singer Arijit Singh tops the most streamed artists of the year in the country, followed by fellow film singer-composers like Pritam, Anirudh Ravichander, A.R. Rahman, plus singer Shreya Ghoshal. While India’s film soundtrack singers, lyricists and composers like Amitabh Bhattacharya, Alka Yagnik and Udit Narayan and Vishal-Shekhar also figure in the top 10, a notable returning inclusion is the late Punjabi star Sidhu Moose Wala, the only artist outside of the film music industry to make the list.
It’s a slightly different case with Spotify India’s most streamed songs, with KING‘s 2022 hit “Maan Meri Jaan” having the highest streams in India on Spotify (over 275 million plays), followed by Karachi singer-songwriter Kaifi Khalil’s tune “Kahani Suno 2.0,” also from 2022. Composer-duo Sachet Parampara‘s “Malang Sajna” with lyricist Kumaar — released at the end of 2022 — is at the fourth spot, right behind Arijit Singh, Pritam and Amitabh Bhattacharya’s “Kesariya” from the movie Brahmastra, which retains a spot from last year. Jasleen Royal‘s “Heeriye” with Arijit Singh also appears in the sixth spot.
Another returning spot reclaimed on Spotify in India in 2023 is the soundtrack to romance-drama Kabir Singh, which is the most streamed album in the country this year. Moose Wala’s Moosetape is the third most streamed album, although that’s hardly fair since the second-most streamed album is a compilation called Ultimate Love Songs by Arijit Singh. Thanks to “Maan Meri Jaan,” KING’s album Champagne Talk is the fifth most streamed album in India, right behind Punjabi-Canadian artist Shubh’s Still Rollin’.
The only international artist to appear on Spotify Wrapped 2023’s most streamed is The Weeknd, that too for his 2016 album Starboy. It claims the 10th spot amongst most streamed albums in India on Spotify, which perhaps makes it a classic for the ages.
On the flip side, Arijit Singh’s popularity with Indian music listeners around the world has resonated hugely, claiming #12 among the most streamed artists globally. Spotify Wrapped stats also report that Bollywood music is most streamed genre in India, followed by Punjabi Pop and Tamil Pop.
While there has often been no official confirmation of when Spotify Wrapped stops tabulating the year’s streams, Spotify has indicated that they like to keep the cut-off date as late as possible before they announce stats at the end of November each year.
