It’s that time of the year again when all the Spotify Wrapped cards take over social media feeds, from listeners and artists alike.
With stats released by Spotify India, we get a glimpse of the most-streamed artists, songs and albums in India. The most streamed artists list marks the dominance of film soundtrack artists like (from first to fifth place) Arijit Singh (holding the top spot for the fourth year in a row), Pritam, A.R. Rahman, Shreya Ghoshal and Anirudh Ravichander. On Spotify’s global stats, Singh take the number 11 spot, with Pritam taking the 31st place for most-streamed artists in the world on the platform.
Among the most-streamed songs on Spotify in India, however, are more independent artists like Anuv Jain (for “Husn,” the second-most streamed song in the country), the erstwhile duo Mitraz (for “Akhiyaan Gulaab” at fifth place for the film version of their 2022 hit “Akhiyaan” for 2024 movie Teri Baaton Mein Asia Uljha Jiya), Pakistani duo Aur (for their song “Tu Hai Kahan” at eighth place, which also dominated Spotify Wrapped charts last year when it released) and Punjabi artist Shubh (his 2023 song “One Love” is the number 10 among most-streamed songs on Spotify in India).
The most-streamed albums in India reflect just how in love we are with film soundtracks like Animal (2023) and Kabir Singh (2019) and even Aashiqui 2 (2013) which take the top three spots, respectively. Not too far behind, however, are the new guard, like Punjabi artist Karan Aujla’s 2023 album Making Memories with producer and songwriter Ikky. Composer Pritam’s soundtrack for Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani featuring songs like “What Jhumka?” takes fifth place, with albums legacy-cementing albums like the late Sidhu Moose Wala’s Moosetape at ninth place and Badshah’s 2024 album Ek Tha Raja at eighth place.
Spotify Wrapped 2024 in India reflects how the country’s listeners swear by their favorites at least when it comes to the top 10 in each category. A wider look at the top 25 songs, artists and albums, however, reveal a wider story – Punjabi artists Karan Aujla, Diljit Dosanjh and hip-hop/pop hitmaker Badshah have plenty of mentions, with Anuv Jain’s “Jo Tum Mere Ho” at number 13 and Kashmiri artist Faheem Abdullah’s “Ishq” at number 14 in the most-streamed songs.
The only non-Hindi and non-Punjabi song to make it to the top 25 streamed songs on Spotify India is composer Sushin Shyam’s Malayalam song “Illuminati” with rapper Dabzee and lyricist Vinayak Sasikumar from the 2024 movie Aavesham. The Malayalam movie’s soundtrack also earns the 11th spot on Spotify India’s top albums of 2024.
On a global streaming level, Spotify Wrapped stats show Taylor Swift as the most-streamed artist, with her album The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology also the most-streamed album. The most-streamed song globally of 2024 on Spotify, however, is held by Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso.”
