The similarities to prog rock band Dream Theater were very apparent in Bengaluru fusion rock band Agam’s 2012 debut album, The Inner Self Awakens. But comparisons aren’t phasing the band, who are stepping up prog rock and metal influences while keeping the Indian classical and Carnatic music side of things intact on their new single “Over The Horizon.”

Agam, who were nominated at the 8th Jack Daniel’s Annual Rock Awards for The Inner Self Awakens, has spent the last two years playing what frontman Harish Sivaramakrishnan calls “more high impact gigs,” including college festivals and clubs. Last month, the band played to a full house at Bengaluru’s CounterCulture alongside Kerala rock band Avial and folk fusion band Lagori.  Says Sivaramakrishnan, “That gig was sold out and the venue was packed beyond capacity with people singing along each and every track of ours. That’s mental.”

Although fitted with an English title, “Over The Horizon” features Malayalam vocals over predominantly rock grooves. Sivaramakrishnan says the song was written early this year, following which the band entered Bengaluru’s Studio F6 and the Music Mint & Sound Glitz studio. Says Sivaramakrishnan, “It’s also the first ever song that we are doing a studio release for before playing it live.”

“Over The Horizon” is the first release from Agam’s yet-to-be-titled second full-length album, due by December 2014. Sivaramakrishnan says, “The album is currently in the recording and tracking stage. We will be doing lesser, but more high impact gigs this year and focusing more on completing the second album.”
