Suran Makes A Suave Comeback With ‘Devils In The City’

The single features South Korean rapper and producer Dok2

Feb 23, 2022

South Korean singer-songwriter and producer Suran released a sleek, captivating music video for her latest single “Devils In The City.” The singer and founder of the independent label, S-TASY recruits South Korean rapper and producer Dok2 as a featuring artist on the latest release. The single also marks Suran’s third single under her independent label.

Co-written by Suran and Dok2, alongside her producer, Zayson (who has worked with industry A-listers such as Epik High, Drunken Tiger JK, Dynamic Duo, NCT’s Taeyong, EXO’s Baekhyun and more), “Devils In The City” comprises synth-R&B beats with Suran playing an integral role in shaping the production and composition of the track.

Forayed by Suran’s raspy vocals, the single opens with an eerie, almost futuristic synth arrangement as the vocalist sings: “If all that I got won’t change my fate/ Will my heart stray further from the light? Yeah/ I couldn’t find the way, searching in vain/ So take it for what you think it’s worth.”

Dok2 balances the ambiance with a smooth melodic rap performance, elucidating on the meaning of life: “I’m just being honest, I was just born like that/ That’s how we all got here, I be just flowing like that/ I know my place and know my role, never got lost.” As the verse unfolds, the rapper further reveals his approach towards life; “Just explored through my vision, kept my eyes closed/ Enjoy the moment, this life that I chose/ Enjoy the moment, let’s see how that goes.”

“We have to keep in mind that anyone can become a devil in this world,” Suran states in a press statement. “Inspired by real experiences, this song expresses the ambivalence of human beings. I was going through some hard times and as I was recovering and pulling myself together, I was able to write this song,” the singer-songwriter explains.

The music video keeps the atmosphere breezy and chic with Suran dressed in a black playsuit with exaggerated nail art and a sleek high ponytail. Strolling atop a skyscraper in the heart of Seoul, “Devils In The Night” weaves mesmerizing cinematography, elevated by the breathtaking skyline and effective usage of red and blue lighting.

Suran’s “Devils In The City” follows the artist’s 2021 releases “Sunny” and “Blanket.” In 2021, Suran established her independent label, S-TASY, and began releasing her own music showing the music industry that it is possible to take control of your own artistry.
