How does it happen that a YouTube channel-turned-music platform created by a Mumbai-based enthusiast is crossing over into hosting post-rock bands not just on the internet, but for a five-city India debut?
That’s the story of how WherePostRockDwells creator Supratik Sarthak aka Ronnie has been putting together a tour for Swiss post-rock band Hubris. As someone who’s built a channel for fans of the (mostly) instrumental, cinematic style of music since 2014, he’s now partnered with venues and promoters to host Hubris between December 4th and 8th in New Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, Mumbai and Hyderabad. Hubris guitarist-composer Jonathon Hohl says over email, “If not for Ronnie who implemented the idea of touring in India, we would probably have been motivated following The Ocean Collective‘s documentary. There seems to be not only a massive audience in terms of numbers, but also in terms of diversity.”
Hubris have two albums to their name so far – Emersion (2015) and Apocryphal Gravity (2017) – which showcase a deeply immersive, spaced-out instrumental sound that revels in movements and electronic music-informed layers. Active since 2014 with Hohl and drummer Nathan Gros, Hubris have just announced their new album Metempsychosis for a March 2020 release. Hohl says, “We will be including one brand new song to the setlist. We have been playing it to the last few shows and have had a superb response so far which comforted us in the decision of keeping it for the upcoming tours. We will be playing most of Apocryphal Gravity and we are keeping one trick up our sleeves for the people who will actually make it to the shows.”
Coming in from an Australian run of shows, Hubris are in India not with the aim of making a profit necessarily, but to at least break even. Admitting that Switzerland is not the best place to start in, Hohl does say that the bright side is the steady increase in demand for their music in Europe and the world. He says, “the demand seems to be more targeted, which in turn reduces the seemingly overwhelming supply. After all, the more the merrier and we think this applies to music as well.”
