Bollywood Hitmaker Tanishk Talks About His First Solo Release ‘Taare’

The composer for songs such as "Raataan Lambiyan," "Bolna" and "Vaaste" talks about working on his solo material alongside Bollywood music projects

After a slew of hits and carving out a space for himself in the Indian film music space — bouquets and brickbats included — Tanishk goes solo on his latest song “Taare,” a cutesy, nocturnal tune that marks his first effort as a singer and composer outside of soundtrack and mainstream pop work.

Previously known for songs like “Vaaste” (sung by Nikhil D’Souza and Dhvani Bhanushali) and “Raataan Lambiyan” (sung by Jubin Nautiyal and Asees Kaur for the movie Shershaah) and several remakes of Bollywood yesteryear tunes, Tanishk takes on a simple, lo-fi informed pop route on “Taare,” whose hook samples a women vocal group. He says about the sample, “I’ve always come across different kind of samples and I think this one goes very well with the song. I found it to be a nice fit as it’s quite catchy and keeps you hooked to the song.”

While the artist also recently hopped on to songs like “Shut Up” with singer Tulsi Kumar and Ghanian pop artist KiDi, “Taare” is one of his more somber releases from T-Series, accompanied by a lyric video. Tanishk says he had always set out to do “something completely different from what I often do” when he began work on “Taare,” which is what pushed him towards releasing “indie pop singles.” The song features lyrics writen by the duo Rashmi Virag. Tanishk adds, “I’ve enjoyed my heart out while recording. Now that the song is ready and out for the listeners, I’m happy that I took this decision and I think I’m gonna do more of it in the future.”

How exactly did the composer find time to release solo material while going from project to project with film and mainstream pop songs? Tanishk chalks it down to the “different creative process” for Bollywood songs and his own material. The creative freedom to explore through his solo songs was the drive that allowed Tanishk to take the time out for it. “Since Indie music is a lot different from film music, I get the liberty to expand my horizon and try out blends of new elements. When you have that kind of freedom, you tend to work over time and make it happen,” he adds.

That said, there are a lot more Bollywood and “non-film” songs that Tanishk is back to working on. “There are some that are already ready and I’m just waiting for the right time to release them. Currently, the plan is to release solo singles every two or three months as well as a few collaborations that are lined up,” he says about future releases.
