Tanmaya Bhatnagar Releases Poignant Debut EP ‘Wherever I Go, I’d Like To Be All I Need’

After a slew of singles, the New Delhi singer-songwriter delivers a cohesive body of work

Since bursting on the scene with her debut melancholic single “Kya Tum Naraaz Ho?” last year, New Delhi singer-songwriter Tanmaya Bhatnagar has been relentless in terms of releases. She’s followed that up with a few more singles, and is now out with her emotional four-track debut EP Wherever I Go, I’d Like To Be All I Need.

Bhatnagar tells us that ever since she began writing the songs that made it to the record around five years ago, an EP was always on the cards. “I wanted to release an EP because these are songs from a time in my life that I could genuinely just call it a chapter after chapter. It’s like a book in itself.”

Wherever I Go, I’d Like To Be All I Need opens with the wistful “Quietly.” It was penned by Bhatnagar earlier this year at a time when she felt lonely and “it just came out of pure emotion.” Next, we hear the airy title track and the musician says, “I think when I was writing the song, I was thinking about life after death and what would people think of me.” She adds, “I think everyone can relate to it in some way or the other. But this song is definitely quite special for me and that’s also why I chose it as the title of the EP because it just makes sense.”

The record then moves to the dynamic “Careful It’s My Heart,” which kicks off as a slow ballad but then slowly builds into a heavy rock track. Talking about it, Bhatnagar says, “We all feel quite protective of ourselves, especially once you have certain experiences in your life.” The EP closes with the raw “I Can’t Go Back to Sleep (Voice Note)” which was previously released as a fully produced song in 2020. On why she decided to include this version on the EP, Bhatnagar says, “I just thought it would make sense to have something as pure and authentic as that voice note from the day I wrote it into the EP, so I think that was a conscious decision.”

The singer-songwriter counts herself as an emotional person and that is evident in her music. “I draw major inspiration from how I feel,” she says. With Wherever I Go, I’d Like To Be All I Need, Bhatnagar invites you (the listener) to hear vulnerable stories about herself and her experiences, as she pours her heart and soul out with her elegant songwriting and calming vocals, making the record feel real and honest.

Bhatnagar worked with New Delhi producers Ritwik De and Amar Pandey on the EP and recorded the tracks at their home studios. “They’re both very talented and brilliant,” says the singer-songwriter. On the live front, the musician plans on taking the EP on the road in 2022 and is gearing up to drop a few more singles too.

Earlier this year, Bhatnagar was also signed to Sony Music India’s sub-label Day One. Although she hasn’t released anything with Day One as of yet, she is keen to see how things shape up. “I think it’s going to be a good experience for me to see how different it is and how labels work. It’s great that I’m getting this opportunity at this point in my career.”
