Emilia Pérez leads all nominees for the 97th Academy Awards, with Jacques Audiard’s audacious musical picking up 13 nominations, followed closely by The Brutalist and Wicked, with 10 each.

Emilia PérezWicked, and The Brutalist will all compete for Best Picture, along with AnoraA Complete UnknownConclaveDune: Part TwoI’m Still HereNickel Boys, and The Substance.

Along with Best Picture, Emilia Pérez stars Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofía Gascón earned nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively. Gascón made history with her nomination, becoming the first out transgender woman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars

Audiard was also nominated for Best Director, while Emilia Pérez’s music team — Clément Ducol and Camille — scored two Best Original Song nominations (“El Mal” and “Mi Camino”), plus one for Best Original Score. Emilia Pérez’s 13 Oscar noms make it the most nominated non-English language film in Oscars history. (The previous record holders, with 10 each, were Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma.)

The Brutalist filmmaker Brady Corbet — who just won Best Director at the 2025 Golden Globes — was nominated in the same category for his acclaimed historical epic. Stars Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, and Guy Pearce all also picked up acting nominations for their performances in the film.

As for Wicked, its two stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. And Timothée Chalamet, Monica Barbaro, and Edward Norton secured acting nominations for their portrayals of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Pete Seeger in A Complete Unknown

The Substance also had a strong showing, with Demi Moore securing a Best Actress nomination, and filmmaker Coralie Fargeat earning Best Director. Fargeat is the only woman up for Best Director this year and will compete against Corbet (The Brutalist), Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), and James Mangold (A Complete Unknown).

Other notable nominees include Mikey Madison and Yura Boris for their performances in Anora, and Ralph Fiennes and Isabella Rossellini for their turns in Conclave. This is notably Rossellini’s first Oscar nomination, and if she wins, it would be with one of the shortest onscreen performances, clocking in at just seven minutes and 51 seconds.

Elsewhere, former Succession co-stars Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin will be battling out again in the Best Supporting Actor category, with Strong up for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in The Apprentice and Culkin nominated for A Real Pain. Strong’s Apprentice co-star, Sebastian Stan, also earned a nomination for his portrayal of Donald Trump in the film.

And, last but not least, Diane Warren is once again nominated for Best Original Song, this time for “The Journey” from Tyler Perry’s WWII drama, The Six Triple Eight. This is Warren’s 16th Academy Award nomination, and her her eighth in a row, having been nominated every year since 2017. While she’s yet to win a competitive Oscar, she did receive an Honorary Award in 2022.

The 2025 Oscar nominees were originally set to be announced last week, Jan. 17, but the ceremony was pushed due to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles (voters were also given an extra two days to submit their ballots). The Academy also canceled its annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon and said that it would donate the $250,000 it planned to spend on the event to wildfire relief efforts.

The 2025 Oscars are still scheduled to go ahead as planned, airing live on March 2 from the Dolby Theater in L.A. Conan O’Brien will host the show, marking his first time helming the Oscars, though he did previously emcee the Emmys in 2002 and 2006.
