Popular music series makes it Indian debut as part of the ongoing Oz Fest
No barbecue or beers in India, but The Aussie BBQ’s Indian debut will provide a launch pad of sorts for Australian bands such as DJ duo, The Aston Shuffle, indie acts Big Scary and Sheppard and Jinja Safari with their African pop rhythms. The bands are set to perform in India as part of the ongoing Oz Fest, an Australian cultural festival supported by Australia International Cultural Council. While this will be the second time that headlining progressive rock act, Karnivool will perform in India, other bands will make their debut in the country with Bacardi NH7 Weekender starting on November 2nd. Â
The Aussie BBQ, as the name suggests, was born in 2003, when two music fans from Melbourne decided to throw open a BBQ for a couple of Australian bands. Over the course of a decade, the Aussie culinary fare has developed into a mini music festival of sorts, taking acts from Down Under to places across Canada, UK, Singapore and the US. Australian Deputy High Commissioner, Lachlan Strahan says, “We have already had a few events with Masterchefs Gary and George in India last month, so we have a good share of activities for foodies. The Aussie BBQ has now evolved into a sampling of diverse music, rather than food. We wanted to encourage Australian bands to see India as a pitstop for concerts, rather than flying over the country.”
This year, apart from sampling some of the music, fans can also switch places and make their own beats at an interactive sound installation at NH7 Weekender Pune this weekend. The Sound Chamber is an inflatable dome that allows music fans to make their own audio-visual mash up since the sound and light installation reacts to human movement. While Strahan and his team are unsure whether The Aussie BBQ will become an annual affair, they are hoping to keep exchanging notes from India and Australia.Â
The Aston Shuffle, Big Scary, Jinja Safari and Sheppard will perform at Bacardi NH7 Weekender at Amanora Park Town in Pune between November 2nd to November 4th; at Hard Rock Cafe, Mumbai on November 7th at Shroom in Delhi on November 10th and at CounterCulture Bengaluru in November 11th. Â
Karnivool will perform on November 4th at Bacardi NH7 Weekender and at Hard Rock Café, Mumbai on November 7th. Entry at HRC Mumbai: Rs 500.
