The Gig Week started out as a series of gigs organized by a team of college students for those who missed out on festivals outside of Delhi. In its current form,  the music series is taking advantage of the sizeable number of venues that have opened up in the capital. The Gig Week’s 2013 edition hosts artists across genres at multiple clubs in Delhi between September 21st and 27th this year. Says director Anubhav Gupta, “We want to simulate the vibe of a festival, without disrupting the routine of life. People who attend The Gig Week can go to work and then come back and watch a gig.”

Headlining acts performing at The Gig Week this year include alt metal band Goddess Gagged, dubstep/breakbeat duo Bay Beat Collective and electro pop duo Shaa’ir + Func. The organizers received 300 applications from bands over a month’s time, to choose from for the lineup The Gig Week. Gupta says they chose three types of bands to play, from headliners like instrumental rock act Blackstratblues last year to upcoming bands and artists from other cities such as Chennai garage rock trio Skrat, who performed at last year’s edition.

Other acts confirmed to play throughout the week include Mumbai electro rock act Pentagram, Delhi folk/indie acoustic act Run! It’s the Kid, Mumbai punk rock band The Lightyears Explode, Pune stoner/prog rock band Drawing Short Straws, Mumbai alt/pop rock band Spud In The Box and folk artist Prateek Kuhad, among others.

Gupta tells us that the number of applications that he received from bands wanting to perform at The Gig Week has shot up from 200 to 300 bands this year. Another step up for the Gig Week is moving to “bigger, better venues” such as Blue Frog, Hard Rock Café and Striker.
