Droning track is highlight of band's new 'Future Present Past' EP
The Strokes’ first video from their Future Present Past EP is a retro lyric video for “Drag Queen.” The clip features grainy, warped VHS images of running robotic forms, lightning, lips wearing red lipstick and a hand holding a globe with the caption “THANK YOU INTERNET.”
The hallucinatory atmosphere matches the track, which finds frontman Julian Casablancas warbling and mumbling bizarre phrases (“Eighties people dancing/ always get it right”) over a storm of electric guitar. The song peaks with a dissonant malfunctioning-modem solo.
Future Present Past, the band’s first new material since 2013 LP Comedown Machine is out today, June 3rd. The EP features three new songs, “Drag Queen,” “Threat of Joy” and “Oblivius,” and an “Oblivius” remix by drummer Fab Moretti. The four-track set was recorded over the past year in Austin and New York with producer Gus Oberg, and it marks the quintet’s first release on Casablancas’ Cult Records.
