We’ve heard of bands from the North East relocate to Delhi and get their bands on the road ”“ from indie rock band The Frisky Pints to alt rock band Yesterdrive, among others ”“ but death metallers Third Sovereign from Aizawl, Mizoram, went against the grain. Although they shifted to Delhi soon after forming in 2003, Third Sovereign regrouped after a three-year break in 2013, back in Aizawl. Says drummer Reuben Lalchuangkima, “Everything is tougher out here [in Aizawl], but we wanted to raise something in our own town.”

The drummer, along with bassist Jonah Lalawmpuia Hnamte and guitarist Benjamin L. Pautu set up recording studio, equipment rental firm and music school Vortex Live & Loud in 2012, where they are recording the followup to their 2007 full-length album, Destined To Suffer. One of the leading metal bands from the North East, the four-member Third Sovereign will take time off from recording to perform at the Rolling Stone Metal Awards on June 22nd at Blue Frog, Mumbai.

Third Sovereign’s RSMA performance marks the band’s first gig in Mumbai after a five-year gap. Says vocalist Vedant Kaushik Barua, who joined the band in 2007, “We’ve played about one gig so far, after getting together again, here in Aizawl last year, but this will be the first one outside the region.” The band last performed in 2009, at Mumbai’s SIES college’s Powerchords band event, alongside Bengaluru old school metallers Kryptos and Mumbai thrash/death metal band Devoid. Just before heading out to Mumbai, the band will support American death metal band Dying Fetus at Rain Revolt: Shillong Open Air on June 7th.

Their setlist for RSMA will feature “Sarcophaga,” the 2010 single which was nominated in the Best Song category at the first ever Rolling Stone Metal Awards, along with a new tracks “Living This Hate,” “Burnt Epitome” and “Slaughtered Mankind” besides older material such as “Destined to Suffer.” Barua also assures that the band will perform their best known song, “Everlasting Burn.”

Third Sovereign perform at the Rolling Stone Metal Awards on June 22nd, 2014 at Blue Frog, Mumbai. Entry: TBA. Event details here.
