The international electronica festival’s office says no decision has been made regarding launching the fest in India, despite media reports and statements from government officials in Goa
In April this year, Dutch EDM Festival Organizers ID&T founder Irfan van Ewijk said there were plans to bring one of their events ”“ Mysteryland, Tomorrowland and Tomorrowworld ”“ to India later this year. While van Ewijk said they were looking for the right partners, The Asian Age reported through industry sources that Universal Music India may be partnering with ID&T to host the Indian edition of Tomorrowland.
But a spokesperson for the festival, originally held in Belgium and host to electronica’s biggest names ”“ from Avicii to Fatboyslim ”“ has said that there’s “absolutely no decision” made yet. Says Tomorrowland press coordinator Debby Wilmsen over email, “This brief note is to respect and salute the Indian Tomorrowland fans and media, and to clarify that absolutely no decision has been made as to whether the next expansion of Tomorrowland will take place in India or in any other country in the world. Tomorrowland is always exploring possibilities & options but in the immediate future, the full focus is on the first Brazilian edition in May 2015, next to the editions in Belgium and USA”
The festival’s statement comes right after Goan website Goacom.com spoke to the state’s tourism minister, Dilip Parulekar, who confirmed that Tomorrowland organizers had approached the ministry to host an event in mid-January. Parulekar added that Tomorrowland organizers were looking for 3.5 lakh square meters of land to host their festival.
While Vh1 Supersonic came in to rival the established Sunburn in Goa last year, another electronica festival, Enchanted Valley Carnival [held in Aamby Valley near Mumbai], also began vying for an audience.A new, internationally-established festival could definitely change India’s electronica festival landscape, but watch this space for more news on whether or not Tomorrowland will make it to India.
