The Indo-American sibling pop duo talk about how their Indian heritage acts as an advantage
Indian-origin, Kentucky-based brothers Neil and Kush Nijhawan aka Twinjabi have been steadily building up a repertoire of slick, glimmering pop singles since 2019. Often dipping into ominous steady synth lines championed by The Weeknd, the duo’s latest single “Talk Of The Town” also heaps up Hindi-English serenading.
Neil says that the song comes at a time when they’re clear that their “authentic vision” wouldn’t get clouded by the opinions of others. He adds, “When we wrote ‘Talk Of The Town,’ we wanted to create something that would get people dancing, moving, and excited. I hope we achieved that, especially with the video.” In the visual, the brothers are seen in a seemingly Phantom of the Opera inspired setting, ballroom dancing and flames in the background as they get up close with two protagonists and sway with them.
Their first single this year, “Talk Of The Town” follows songs such as “Brown Magic,” “Bombay” and “Desi Dons,” among other tracks. Throughout, Twinjabi have leveraged their Indian identity as music makers. Kush says about being a part of the Indian diaspora and brown artists making it, “The Hindi-English mix represents our identity […] Being yourself is your biggest superpower, and we definitely stay true to what we like in our art.”
While there are still several assumptions and stereotypes that remain unshattered when it comes to the way brown artists are perceived in the U.S., Kush adds that they choose to focus on the positives. “There are a lot of great people in Kentucky that have helped us immensely along the way in both small and big ways. We don’t talk enough about that,” he adds.
Twinjabi promise a “big collaboration” later this year along with more songs and music videos. Neil adds, “We’ll also be visiting India in May. Our parents and dharma tradition have taught us to work hard at anything you do in life, and to not worry about the end-result. It’s about the journey, not the destination. That’s what we plan to do.”
