Here’s What U2’s Setlist For India Might Look Like

We guestimate the songs that the Irish rock legends' will pick for their debut in the country in Mumbai on December 15th

A quick look at Setlist.fm, one of the go-to websites for crowdsourced setlists tells us straightaway that Irish rock band U2‘s upcoming India debut on December 15th in Mumbai is a highly anticipated performance. The homepage of Setlist.fm itself puts U2 amongst its most “popular setlist” searches.

A look at their recent shows part of their Australia and Asia tour so far reveals that U2’s performance is divided into three parts, including the encore. Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton will likely open with classics like “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” “New Year’s Day” and “Pride (In The Name of Love).” Considering they’re celebrating their 1987 album The Joshua Tree, the highlight of the set remains songs off the seminal record – “With or Without You,” “Where The Streets Have No Name” and of course, “Bullet The Blue Sky.” As expected, the album will be performed in its entirety, followed by one additional song before the encore. This could be the rollicking hit “Desire” or “Angel of Harlem,” off their 1988 album Rattle and Hum.

The encore at Mumbai’s D.Y. Patil Stadium is likely to include electrifying favorites such as “Elevation” and “Vertigo,” plus early 2000s hit “Beautiful Day.” In between, expect anything from their recent albums, Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, including “Every Breaking Wave” and “Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way.”

While artists rarely change setlists from city to city, the fact that U2 are closing their Joshua Tree tour in Mumbai could mean they’ll go out with a bang. Last month, the band also showed fans in India how much a performance in India meant to them, by collaborating with music composing maestro A.R. Rahman for a track called “Ahimsa.” Chances are, Rahman – much like his appearance at the Global Citizen Festival with British rockers Coldplay – may appear on stage with Bono and co. to premiere the song live.
