Undying Inc. Part Ways with Reuben Bhattacharya

After 14 years helming artwork, bass and managerial duties, Reuben Bhattacharya has left New Delhi tech/groove metal monsters Undying Inc. The announcement came earlier this week from the band, with Bhattacharya confirming the news via his Facebook page later that day. The band’s last show with the full lineup ”“ vocalist Shashank Bhatnagar, guitarist Biswarup Gupta and drummer Nishant Hagjer ”“ took place at Bacardi NH7 Weekender in Shillong in October.

While the band cited “unfortunate circumstances” leading to the bassist’s exit following their Shillong set, Bhatnagar says, “It was all well understood, and quick. [There were] no discussions required. For all it was worth, we wish him luck for all the good/bad times shared over these years, future, and move on.” Gupta adds, “It was purely the band’s decision and it is very clear in my head that we don’t want to work with him.”

The vocalist adds that they’ve only now begun looking for a replacement, but without any public auditions. Bhatnagar adds, “We want someone who also connects to the three of us on a personal level, apart from just bass playing and [an] understanding of our weird music. We have already auditioned quite a few so far though, and almost zeroed down on some. Announcements will be up very soon.” The band has said that currently, they aren’t looking to commission any artwork in the foreseeable future from Bhattacharya, who has created the signature Undying Inc. look.

Bhattacharya, also known for his work as graphic designer Visual Amnesia, said in his statement, “Even though our visions are different for the future, the body of work we created will always be remembered.” Although amicable, he called it “the end of an era”. He added that he would continue his work as an illustrator and musician. “The process of creation continues, as always. I hope the future brings greater things for everyone.”

The shake-up comes nearly four years after their last change, when Bhatnagar left the band in December 2012 citing musical and personal difference, only to bury the hatchet and reunite with the band in August 2013. Bhatnagar, for his part, says “Undying’s dirt will never go out, period. We are already heading to the studio this December to track our brand new single with Studio Fuzz.” Hagjer adds, “In the last few months, we have been hunting for the perfect jam pad in Delhi with no luck! We have been composing, recording and staying in shape whenever possible.” More updates from the band are expected in January.
