The Grateful Dead Movie ”“ which was shot at a 1974 Dead concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom ”“ is returning to theaters for one night on April 20th. The film captures the band near the peak of their powers, and features classics “Morning Dew,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar Magnolia” and “Truckin.” In this previously unseen interview Garcia talks about how he learned to play guitar at a relatively late age and what inspires him to keep moving forward.
The surviving members of the Grateful Dead are touring this summer, but in two separate camps. Bob Weir and Phil Lesh are in Furthur, which also features John Kadlecik ”“ who spent years playing the Garcia parts in the Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra. Drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann are touring as the Rhythm Devils. In a 2010 Rolling Stone article Weir explained why the band had split into two camps. “Phil and I were boldly pursuing new musical directions onstage, and some of the guys weren’t picking up on it,” Weir said. “Phil and I are way more current.”
