Mumbai-based singer-songwriter artist Vasuda Sharma’s new video for “Already Here” is a vibrant neon celebration about finding happiness in the present. A collaboration with Serbian singer-songwriter Aleksandra Denda, the track also features musicians from around the world, including guitarist Yousif Yaseen from Kuwait, percussionist Moez Dawad from Egypt, Slovenian saxophonist Jan Kus from New York City, among others.

Sharma and Denda first met while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA three years ago. When Denda visited India to teach music at Delhi’s Global Music Institute of Delhi a while ago, the two caught up and worked on an idea that they had been discussing on mail and Skype for some time. “She had an idea for a chorus and we ended up writing the verses together,” says Sharma who worked on the arrangement of the track in India before Denda’s arrival. “A lot of back and forth happened online and when she got here, we approached all our Berklee friends with the arrangement we had in mind.”

A genre-bending composition, “Already Here” combines Arabic rhythms with pop and R&B even as Sharma and Denda show off their “oriental vocal inflections”. The video is directed by Jibran Khan and it’s reminiscent of the neon makeup and UV light used by artists like British singer-songwriter Kyla La Grange and American singer Kesha in their videos for “Cut Your Teeth” and “Your Love Is My Drug”, respectively. “I have never done anything like that before,” says Sharma, adding. “One of Aleksandra’s students [at Global Music Institute] had a photograph of herself wearing neon makeup and we were really intrigued by it.” The two spent a lot of time doing research online and checking out similar themed videos before finally creating an idea of what they wanted to do. Sharma says, “We wanted something more than just a regular video of us jamming and singing together.”
