The New Delhi/New York singer-songwriter is plotting an EP, a 'streaming tour' and more
Summer might be nearing an end, but New York-based singer-songwriter Abhilasha Sinha offers a dollop of warm nostalgia with her latest release, “Honey Bee.” The phone-shot, DIY visual for the easygoing song shows Sinha on her own and also with her partner, on the beach as well as on a terrace, amongst other settings.
A song about glimmering love, Sinha wrote the track a year ago, but the lyrics about longing for a significant other took on a new meaning in these pandemic times where many relationships have become long-distance. She says about the changing meaning of her song, “It’s a bittersweet feeling, because on one hand, I’m pleasantly surprised how well this song sums up some feelings we’ve all had in quarantine (“I am daydreaming, thinking about places I can stay…”) But I’m also sad, because this wasn’t supposed to be such a universal feeling of longing and being stuck. It was supposed to be just for someone wondering where to travel next to be with with the one they love — certainly didn’t think we wouldn’t be able to move around at all.”
Inspired by British artist Lianne La Havas’ visual aesthetics for videos like “Paper Thin” and “Can’t Fight,” the grainy footage for “Honey Bee” is framed as though it was shot on an old camera, even though Sinha mentions it was entirely shot on iPhone, “with cling film stuck on the camera to give it a ‘film glow’ vibe.” Edited by New Delhi/Goa photographer and filmmaker Mohit Kapil, the track was mixed and mastered by producer-guitarist Keshav Dhar.
Sinha promises one more “really special music video” that’s coming up, along with a Hindi single that follows up the enormously successful “Tum Ho Yahaan” and an EP. The singer-songwriter adds, “Post that, a streaming tour, and certainly lots of lovely collabs with artists I love. And I have idea for a cooking show!”
