South Korean group Aespa dropped their first English single “Life’s Too Short” earlier today. The quartet previously gave audiences a glimpse of the track during their performance at Coachella 2022.
Embracing the currently popular Y2K aesthetic trend, Aespa’s music video for “Life’s Too Short” is an homage to fashion, films and pop culture from the early 2000s. There are references to films like Mean Girls and Clueless, plus the world’s growing obsession at the time with cyberspace (which fits Aespa’s tie-in to the meta verse) all in hazy tones of pink, purple and blue.
The pop track is an anthem about staying true to yourself and doing what makes you happy – no matter what haters have to say. “I’m doing me regardless/ And I don’t care what you say about it/ And it don’t matter if you like it or not/ I’m having all this fun/ So why would I ever stop?” Featuring a vibrant electric guitar riff, the single keeps it light and bright by pairing soft pop with the members’ breezy vocals.
“Life’s Too Short” will be featured in the group’s upcoming sophomore EP Girls that drops on July 8th. The EP will be their first album release after becoming the first K-pop group to sign with Warner Records earlier this month.
