Watch aespa’s Dynamic Return With ‘Next Level’

SM Entertainment’s super rookie girl group unravel more chapters with their digital avatars in the new single

May 17, 2021

After their fiery debut with “Black Mamba” in 2020, aespa are back with another energetic EDM anthem, “Next Level.”

A remake of the widely popular Hollywood film, Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw ‘s original soundtrack, “Next Level” highlights aespa’s vocal prowess with a switch in composition and arrangement to match the group’s unique style.

Following the events in “Black Mamba,” aespa’s latest comeback picks up from where it left off; To fix the damage caused by the Black Mamba, the four members embark on an adventure to the virtual land of ‘KWANGYA,’ to mend the ‘SYNK’ between the aespa members and their virtual alter egos, ‘ae.’

The video is fresh and vibrant with colorful cinematography blended with futuristic VFX, elevating the appeal of the track. Staying true to aespa’s youthful and powerful sound, the rhythm switches mid-track with an upbeat-jazz inspired composition, as vocalists Ningning and Winter sing “Never look back/ Don’t covet things of KWANGYA/ If the promises are broken, everything will be out of control/ The signal is becoming unstable since a certain point in time.”

Giselle and Karina take on the baton from the vocal line as they further explain the story in fierce rap style, “A hallucination quest created by the Black Mamba/ aespa, they want to separate out ae, that’s right/ I lose my balance and my voice too/ In the illusion of being criticized and alienated.”

In a press conference held earlier this morning, the group expressed their thoughts on their unique concept and what it signifies. “We have our own unique worldview that represents ‘the meeting of another self (an avatar) and experiencing a new world’. ” explained Winter. She continued “This is something that’s never been told anywhere before. This gives us our own unique color and style, so we were all very pleased and excited for our future activities.”

When asked about the group’s plans and goals, Giselle answered, “We were grateful to receive so much love from our debut song, ‘Black Mamba.’ Since we’re still rookies, our goal is to continue to show our growth rather than set specific records or results.”
