Watch ASTRO’s MJ Deliver Happiness and Energy in ‘Get Set Yo’

Accompanied by a bright music video, the release marks the vocalist’s solo debut

Giving his fans a deeper look into his artistry outside of ASTRO and acting projects, South Korean singer, songwriter and actor MJ has officially debuted as a solo artist with the feel-good, anthemic single, “Get Set Yo.”

Produced by famous South Korean trot singer Young Tak, “Get Set Yo” also features child trot singer Kim Tae Yeon, who found fame from the reality television show, Miss Trot 2. Given MJ’s earlier association with the genre through his work with the trot project boyband SUPERFIVE, the collaborations and composition of the single are a fitting tribute to the vocalist’s musical influences. Though the track is heavily influenced by trot, “Get Set Yo” also weaves in a hint of funk, moving the sonic identity of the single towards the retro-dance category.

Mirroring the track’s feel-good composition, the music video for “Get Set Yo” is a jolt of instant energy. Playing the role of a delivery executive, MJ lives up to his endearing nickname ‘Happy Virus’ with a bright and chirpy performance. Though he’s swamped with pending deliveries, MJ is determined to make the most out of the day; “I’m an early bird/ I deliver happiness/ Let’s make it a refreshing day again today.” With a jazz-influenced arrangement with the periodical use of brass instruments and MJ’s breathy, energetic vocals, “Get Set Yo” checks off all the boxes as the go-to track for an instant mood booster.

MJ’s first solo digital single, Happy Virus, comprises two tracks– “Valet Parking” and the lead single, “Get Set Yo.” This marks the first time any member from ASTRO has officially released solo music. In September 2020, fans saw the sub-unit from the group-Moonbin and Sanha- release their EP, In-Out. Lead by the single “Bad Idea,” this was the first sub-unit from ASTRO to officially release music together. Earlier this year, the group returned with their dance-pop summer release “After Midnight”– the lead single off their six-track EP, Switch On
